Everything You May Need To Know About Sedation Dentistry

Many people fear going to the dentist. They assume that they won’t be able to relax in the chair and will be in pain the entire time. Some people dread the sound of dental drills or the sight of needles. Sedation dentistry helps patients relax during dental procedures. As a result, their dental experience is much more comfortable.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of medication to help patients relax during dental treatment. Sedation dentistry is commonly recommended for patients who have dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or very sensitive teeth.

Sedation dentistry is performed under the supervision of a dental professional in a clinical setting.

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is recommended for patients who are fearful of dental treatment or have had a bad dental experience in the past. Sedation dentistry may also be used for those undergoing a longer procedure or treatment.

Types of sedation dentistry

There are different types of sedation dentistry. Your dentist will discuss the options that work best for you and your procedure.

  1. Oral sedation:This is the most common form of sedation used in dentistry. Your dentist will give you a pill to take before you get in the dental chair. This pill will make you feel drowsy, but you’ll still be awake enough to respond to commands.
  2. Nitrous oxide:Nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas, is inhaled through the nose. It helps patients feel relaxed and wears off very quickly.
  3. Intravenous (IV) sedation: If your dentist needs to perform multiple procedures in one visit, they may suggest IV sedation. Here, patients are completely asleep and are unable to respond. This sedative is administered intravenously (through the bloodstream) and takes effect quickly. Patients typically recover from IV sedation within a few hours.

Benefits of sedation dentistry

Sedation dentistry benefits your health and safety in the following ways.

  1. Sedation dentistry is an effective way to ensure that you stay calm and comfortable throughout your dental appointment. Anxiety can keep you from fully enjoying your time at the dental office. However, sedation dentistry can help you overcome your fears and anxieties so that you can receive the dental care that you need.
  2. Sedation dentistry is a helpful tool for patients with dental anxiety or dental fear. In some cases, sedation dentistry makes it easier to complete dental treatments - such as root canals - that might otherwise be uncomfortable.
  3. Sedation dentistry prevents you from experiencing pain during the procedure. Since you won’t feel any pain, you won’t need to take as many breaks during your procedure, and you can also look forward to a faster procedure overall.
