All About Dental Implants

  • If you have one or more missing teeth and want to replace them with artificial teeth, dental implants may be the ideal solution. Dental implants fuse with your jaw bone and support artificial teeth that look and feel like natural teeth.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are metal studs that are surgically embedded into your jawbone, under the gums. They serve as a support for permanent artificial teeth.

These artificial tooth roots fuse with the jaw bone in a process known as osseointegration. They provide a stable structure for teeth replacement solutions that will help you speak and eat normally.

Types of Dental Implants

As per the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, there are two types of dental implants:

  • Subperiosteal implants: This type of implant is recommended for patients who do not have sufficient jawbone. They are placed on the top of the jawbone.
  • Endosteal implants: These implants are the most commonly used. An endosteal implant is surgically embedded into your jawbone to support one or more artificial teeth.

Dental Implant Process

  • Examination

After learning about your medical history and a thorough assessment of your oral cavity, the dentist will discuss treatment options with you. The doctor will take X-rays or computed tomography scans (CBCT) to locate the nerves and sinuses which may be close to the implant site and evaluate the bone density.

  • Implant Placement

The insertion of implants is carried out in one or more stages depending on the number of implants you need. To place the implant, the dentist makes a small incision in the gums to expose the bone. Then, an implant bed is prepared using a special drill, into which the implant is inserted.

  • Teeth Preparation and Impressions

The dentist will take the impressions of your teeth once your gums are completely healed. These impressions are used to manufacture a dental crown that matches the rest of your teeth.

  • Fitting of Crowns

Once your crown is ready, the dentist will fix it onto the abutment over the dental implant and check that it fits well and looks good.

  • Bone Grafts

Sometimes, bone grafts are needed to make your jawbone suitable for implant surgery.
